D. Smith, why processes like "the ethnic fragmentation" and "the awakening of the separatist nationalism" are repeated with such strength.

THE ROMANIANS IN BULGARIA
Geographical position. Main settlements.
The Romanian (vlach) ethnic element is concentrated especially in the Northwest side of Bulgaria (Vidin county - almost 35 settlements: Lom, Svistov, Nicopolie, Vrata, Mihailovgrad, Bregova, Codozlui, Ostrov), in the southwest part on Struma and Mesta River's valley (Macedonia Pirina - Romanian ethnic minority living in Blagoevgrad, Velingrad, Pestera, Rachitovo, Dorcovo) and also in the north and Northeast side of Bulgaria (Silistra, Turtucaia, Dobrici, Balcik etc.)

ETNOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE
Spread all over the entire Balkan and Trans-Balkan Peninsula, starting from the near vicinity of the Danube in the regions: Timoc (Bulgarian and Yugoslavian), Lom, Oreahova, Nicopole, Pleven, VraTa, reaching the Quadrilateral at Tolbuhin and Sofia, in Rhodope, in Vojvodina, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, along the Adriatic coast until Northern Dalmatia, Pindus, in the Ionian Islands, in the Northern Greece, in Epirus, Thessaly, in the Istrian Peninsula and even in European Turkey, the representatives of Balkan or Oriental Romanities – as they were called by various specialists, have been living in more or less numerous communities.

It may be noticed nowadays that, at a greater or at a lesser extent, at all cardinal points, closer or farther, Romania is a country surrounded by Romanians. Consequently, a history of Romanians ought to be mentioned rather than of a history of Romania.

Prehistory
The human presence in this area dates from immemorial times. Traces of his presence were discovered in Valachia even since the inferior Paleolithic age, 600.000 years ago. As to the middle Paleolithic age, human presence is confirmed in the caves. Concerning the superior Paleolithic age, at least 16 levels of dwellings were discovered in the archeological station of Ripiceni.
